So many parents are wondering about when to book a newborn photographer in Carmel, IN.
The short answer: during your second trimester.
Most families reach out sometime between 20–30 weeks of pregnancy to reserve their newborn session. Booking during this window ensures there is space on the calendar around your due date and gives us time to plan your session together.
As a newborn photographer serving families in Carmel, Indiana and the greater Indianapolis area, I typically book newborn sessions several months in advance, so reaching out earlier is always recommended.
Why It’s Best to Book Before Your Baby Arrives

Newborn photography works a little differently than other types of sessions.
Because babies arrive on their own timeline, we don’t schedule your exact session date right away. Instead, I reserve space around your due date on my calendar.
Once your baby arrives, you simply send me a message and we schedule your session within the ideal timeframe.
This approach ensures your baby is photographed while they are still in those very early days.
The Best Age for Newborn Photos
Most newborn sessions take place when baby is between 7–14 days old.
During this stage babies are typically:
Sleepier
Comfortable being gently posed
Still naturally curled up
Of course, beautiful images can still be captured after this stage, but those first two weeks are when we’re most likely to capture those classic newborn portraits parents love.

A Relaxed Studio Experience
Newborn sessions take place in my private studio in Carmel, Indiana, designed to be a calm and welcoming space for families.
My goal is to make the experience feel easy for new parents. When you arrive, everything is prepared for you so you can simply relax and enjoy the moment with your baby.
Families have access to:
A curated client wardrobe for mothers
Wraps and simple styling for baby
Professional hair and makeup for moms
A comfortable space for feeding and breaks
You truly just need to show up and enjoy the experience.

Planning Your Session
After your newborn session is reserved, we will schedule a planning appointment where we go over styling and details for your session.
We’ll talk through things like:
Colors and wardrobe
Dresses from the studio wardrobe
Including siblings and family portraits
Artwork and ways to display your images at home
This allows your session to feel relaxed and personalized.
What If You Haven’t Booked a Newborn Photographer Yet?
If your baby has already arrived and you haven’t scheduled newborn photos, don’t worry — it’s still worth reaching out.
While the ideal window for newborn portraits is within the first two weeks, I often photograph babies who are a few weeks old as well. At this stage, sessions tend to focus more on natural moments, family connection, and baby being held rather than traditional curled newborn poses.
Every baby is different, and beautiful images can still be captured even if you reach out after your baby is born.
If you’re unsure whether it’s too late, feel free to send a message and I can let you know what options are available.
Why Newborn Photography Matters
Those early days with a new baby pass incredibly quickly.
Between sleepless nights, feedings, and adjusting to life with your newest family member, it’s easy for those tiny details to blur together. Professional newborn photography gives families a way to preserve what this stage truly felt like.
The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.
The tiny fingers and sleepy stretches.
The quiet moments as a new family.
These images often become some of the most meaningful photographs families have, and many parents later tell me they are incredibly grateful they took the time to document this season.
