Pregnancy is such a special and fleeting season. One moment you’re watching your bump grow and preparing for baby, and before you know it, your little one is in your arms.
One of the things my Carmel Indiana Maternity Photography clients often tell me after their maternity session is how helpful it was to be guided through the entire experience. You never have to wonder what to do with your hands or how to stand. I walk you through everything so the photos feel natural, relaxed, and beautiful.
While every maternity session is a little different, there are a few timeless images I always make sure we capture. These are the moments that help tell the story of this season in a meaningful way.
Here are six maternity poses I never want to miss during a Carmel Indiana maternity photography session.

What to Expect During a Carmel Indiana Maternity Photography Session
A maternity session is designed to feel relaxed and comfortable while documenting this special season before your baby arrives. During your session, I guide you through poses that highlight your growing bump and the connection within your family. My Carmel studio is filled with soft natural light, creating the bright and timeless look you see throughout my work.
The Classic Profile
A beautiful side profile is one of the most iconic maternity photos.
This pose highlights the natural shape of your bump and creates a simple, elegant portrait that focuses on this incredible season of motherhood. With soft window light and gentle hand placement, the result feels timeless and refined.
It’s also one of the images families most often choose when printing artwork for their homes.

The Belly Detail
Some of the most meaningful images from a maternity session are the quiet, simple moments.
A close-up of hands resting on your belly captures the anticipation and connection you already feel with your baby. These images may seem simple, but they often become favorites because they focus on the details that make this season so special.
They also work beautifully in albums alongside your other maternity images.

The Sibling Moment
If you’re expecting baby number two or three, including siblings in your maternity session adds such a sweet layer to the story.
Little hugs, cuddles, and playful moments with your growing belly capture the excitement older siblings feel about the baby they’re about to meet. These photos are often some of the most genuine moments of the entire session.
They also become incredibly meaningful for your children to look back on someday.

The Parent Connection
Maternity photos aren’t just about the bump. They’re about the family that’s growing. Capturing a quiet moment between parents adds so much emotion to the session. Whether it’s a soft embrace, hands resting together on the belly, or a gentle kiss, these images reflect the love and anticipation surrounding your growing family.
They help tell the story of this chapter in your lives.

The Belly Kiss
One pose I always love capturing, especially when there’s an older sibling involved, is the belly kiss.
There’s something so sweet about documenting that excitement and curiosity before baby arrives. Whether it’s a kiss, a hug, or tiny hands resting on mom’s belly, these images are often some of the most emotional from the entire session.
They capture such a tender moment before your family grows.

The Whole Family
One of my favorite parts of maternity sessions is photographing the entire family together.
These portraits celebrate not only your pregnancy, but the life you’ve already built together. Years from now, these photos will remind you what this season felt like as you waited to meet your baby.
Family portraits often become the images clients display in frames, albums, and gallery walls because they capture this moment in such a meaningful way.

Planning Your Maternity Session
Maternity sessions typically take place between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy, when your bump is beautifully visible but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move and pose easily.
Most sessions take place in my Carmel studio, which is designed to feel calm, bright, and welcoming for families. Mothers also have access to my curated client wardrobe, making it easy to find something flattering and timeless for your photos.
My goal is always to make the experience feel relaxed and effortless while creating images you’ll treasure for years to come.
