Hi, I'm Lindsay

How to prepare older siblings for a newborn photo session, whether in studio or in your home. Helpful advice from a Carmel, Indiana newborn photographer.

One of the most common concerns parents have before their newborn session is:

“What if my toddler doesn’t cooperate?”

If you’re asking yourself how to prepare older siblings for a newborn photo session, you’re not alone. Many families arrive with toddlers or young children, and it’s completely normal to wonder how things will go.

The good news is that with a little preparation, and a relaxed mindset, sibling photos can become some of the sweetest moments from your entire session.

As a newborn photographer serving families in Carmel, Indiana and the greater Indianapolis area, I photograph newborn sessions both in my studio and in families’ homes, and I’ve worked with many toddlers over the years. Here are a few simple tips to help older siblings feel comfortable and make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Talk About the Session Ahead of Time

A few days before your session, it can help to talk with your child about what will happen.

Let them know:

  • A photographer is coming to take pictures of the family
  • We’ll take some photos with the new baby
  • It will be fun!

Keeping the explanation simple helps them feel more relaxed and prepared.

Keep Expectations Low

Toddlers are toddlers. They don’t always want to sit still or follow directions — and that’s okay.

My goal during newborn sessions isn’t perfection. Instead, I focus on capturing natural connection between siblings and their new baby.

Sometimes the sweetest images come from simple moments like:

  • A curious toddler looking at their baby sibling
  • A quick hug or kiss on baby’s head
  • Snuggling together with mom and dad

Letting things unfold naturally often leads to the most meaningful photos.

Bring Snacks or a Favorite Toy

A small snack, favorite toy, or comfort item can go a long way in helping toddlers feel happy and relaxed during the session.

For in-home sessions, kids often feel comfortable right away because they’re in their familiar environment.

For studio sessions, having something familiar from home can help them warm up quickly.

Start with Sibling and Family Photos

During newborn sessions, we typically photograph sibling and family portraits early in the session.

This allows older siblings to participate while they still have lots of energy and attention. After their photos are finished, they can relax, play nearby, or take a break while we focus on baby.

Let Kids Be Kids

The most important thing to remember is that newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and flexible.

There’s time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Toddler wiggles
  • Diaper changes
  • Reset moments

Whether the session takes place in the studio or in your home, my goal is to guide the experience in a way that keeps everyone calm while capturing beautiful images of your growing family.

Some of the most meaningful photos often come from those in-between moments — the curiosity, excitement, and gentle interactions between siblings and their brand new baby.

Planning Your Newborn Session

Newborn sessions can take place either in my private studio in Carmel, Indiana or in the comfort of your home.

Studio sessions offer a calm, styled environment with access to the client wardrobe, wraps and styling for baby, and professional hair and makeup for moms.

In-home sessions focus more on natural moments and documenting your family in the space where these early days are unfolding.

Both options create beautiful, meaningful photographs of this special time.

Welcoming a new baby is a big transition for older siblings, and capturing those first moments together is incredibly special.

A little preparation can help things go smoothly, but the most important thing is to relax and enjoy the experience. The genuine interactions between your children are often the moments families treasure most.
