I'm Lindsay and I'm so happy you're here. This blog is a collection of inspiration and resources for families looking to capture precious memories through fine art photography.

Hi, I'm Lindsay

If you’re reading this, that means you are expecting a baby and probably wondering when to schedule your newborn session. I’m so excited for you and your family! Whether this is your first or your fourth child, welcoming a new baby is such a beautiful time that always goes by way too fast. I’m so glad you’re researching when to schedule your newborn session. Your newborn’s portraits will be a priceless keepsake for you always to look back on and remember those first few weeks with your sweet baby!

Knowing when you should schedule your newborn photos can be a little confusing. Babies don’t usually arrive on their due dates, so how can you plan a newborn photoshoot? I’m here to help! I will answer the big question of when you should reach out to your newborn photographer and schedule your session.

When To Schedule Your Newborn Session

The ideal time to schedule your newborn session is within the first two weeks of life. This is the optimal timeframe because your newborn is still sleepy, snuggly, and easy to pose. Your newborn’s safety and comfort are our top priorities during the session. We’ll be able to take those sweet swaddled portraits and capture that precious newborn curl. Even just two weeks after birth, your newborn will start to be more awake and, as a result, is not as easy to pose.

Of course, we can and do take newborn portraits after the first two weeks. I have families who, for many different reasons, are unable to come in within the first two weeks. This is never a problem, and we can take portraits up to 4-6+ weeks after your baby is born. One benefit of waiting is that your baby is usually much more alert, and we can get portraits with your baby’s eyes open in addition to sleeping.

So, if the best time to take newborn photos is within the first two weeks, when do you book with your newborn photographer?

When Should You Actually Book Your Newborn Photographer?

With that said, you want to book with your newborn photographer as soon as you feel comfortable doing so during your pregnancy. If you wait until the baby is born, your dream newborn photographer might not be available. Many of my clients reach out during their second trimester to get on my calendar. I’ll reserve your due date on my calendar, but I always have flexibility in my calendar to accommodate an early or late arrival.

Once your baby arrives, I’ll have you send me a text or an email to let me know. Then we will pick a date within those first two weeks. If you’re being induced, we can choose your session date in advance.

I only take on a limited number of newborn sessions per month to ensure my availability around your due date and be able to provide the highest quality service for your family. My calendar tends to book up quickly, and I’m always sad to have to turn away families who want to book at the last minute.

Documenting Milestones with Baby’s First Year Collective

The first year with your baby will fly by! Most new parents don’t realize how much their baby will grow and change that first year. Let me take the stress out of documenting each major milestone throughout your baby’s first year with the Baby’s First Year Collective. The Collective is a selection of milestone sessions that includes 3-4 sessions, such as maternity, newborn, 6-8 months, and your baby’s first birthday. Baby’s First Year Collective families receive priority scheduling, so they don’t have to worry about missing a milestone.
